Google has released a significant update to NotebookLM that transforms the note-taking tool into an autonomous research agent. The update, announced on June 8, 2026, incorporates Gemini 3.5 along with a new reasoning system called Antigravity.
What Changes?
The previous version of NotebookLM was essentially a research assistant that worked on documents you uploaded. It could summarize, answer questions, and generate ideas, but always within the perimeter of your content.
The new version is radically different:
- Searches sources autonomously. You no longer need to upload documents. NotebookLM can search the web, find relevant sources, and analyze them on its own.
- Runs code. It has a secure cloud sandbox where it can write and execute Python scripts, data analyses, and visualizations.
- Generates complete files. It can produce PDFs, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, CSV files, JSON, and even images.
- More than 100 built-in skills. From data analysis to structured report generation.
How Well Does It Work?
Google reports that the new system has a 78.2% win rate against the previous version on advanced web research and source discovery benchmarks. On average, the improvement exceeds 65% across all evaluated dimensions.
The Antigravity system, originally presented at Google I/O 2026, is the reasoning engine that enables NotebookLM to conduct deep, multi-step research without losing its way.
Availability
The update is available starting today for:
- Google AI Ultra (premium subscription)
- Google Workspace AI Ultra (enterprise customers)
Google states it plans to expand availability to more tiers “over time,” suggesting free users may eventually get access, though likely with usage limits.

NotebookLM with Antigravity represents a shift in how we understand assisted research tools. Until now, AI assistants were reactive: you ask, they answer. This version is proactive: it can take a research direction, search for information on its own, process it, and return a complete report.
