The implications

That bots now surpass humans in web traffic has concrete consequences:

For the digital economy: programmatic advertising, impression-based business models, and traditional SEO all assume predominantly human traffic. If 55% of traffic is bots, metrics no longer mean what they used to. Companies measuring performance in visits, page views, or time-on-site are increasingly measuring machine behavior, not people’s.

For content creators: the dilemma becomes existential. If your articles are primarily read by bots extracting information to train models that compete with you, does it make sense to keep producing original content? For web infrastructure: bandwidth and compute costs are soaring. Companies like Cloudflare and Akamai report sustained traffic increases that don’t correlate with real user growth. Someone pays for that bandwidth — and it’s the websites, not the bots.

The industry’s response

Reactions have been varied: Cloudflare introduced AI Audit, a dashboard that lets sites see how much AI bot traffic they’re receiving and selectively block it. Media companies like The New York Times and Reuters have blocked training crawlers in their terms of service. And Google, ironically, is proposing standards for agents — which would generate even more bot traffic — to operate in a structured way.

CAPTCHAs, meanwhile, have become nearly irrelevant: modern vision models solve them with accuracy surpassing humans. The “I’m not a robot” has become a fiction.

An internet for machines

The 50%+ bot traffic milestone is not the problem itself — it’s the symptom of a deeper transformation. The internet is becoming a medium where machines are full citizens. The question is not whether we should slow down bots (we can’t), but how to design an internet that works for both humans and machines without the former being crushed by the volume of the latter.

The answer, probably, is what Google calls the “agentic web”: instead of bots pretending to be humans browsing sites designed for humans, building specific interfaces for agents. But that requires a level of cooperation and standardization that today’s fragmented industry doesn’t have.

Meanwhile, over half of web traffic is no longer human. And humans didn’t even notice.
